Belur math is in the northern part of the city. It is uniquely built to look like various religious shrines from different angles. The belur math looks like a temple, mosque and church from different angles. Belur math is a fair representation of the tolerance of Indian culture towards every religion. Belur math is headquarters of the world renowned organization Ramakrishna mission. Belur math was a tribute by swami Vivekananda who brought about a socio-cultural revolution in India to his guru Sri Ramakrishna.
The st’ Paul’s cathedral was founded in the year 1839. It was mostly because of the efforts put by Bishop Wilson. It was declared as the first Episcopal church of the orient in 1847. The unique indo-gothic architecture of the st’ Paul’s cathedral can be owed to Major W.N. Forbes. In 1897 an earthquake demolished the 61m high tower. Later when it was resurrected, it was again destroyed by an earthquake. Finally it was again rebuilt as an imitation of the bell Harry tower of Canterbury cathedral.
Fort Williams is another major traveling destination of kolkata. It is the most impressive and enchanting of all the forts in east. It still serves as the citadel of the Indian armed forces in the eastern parts of India. There are two Williams, one is old and one is new. The old fort was made in the days when east India Company was still new in India. The fort was completed in the year 1706 and it was named after king Williams, the king of England.
